Mothers’ Day in Armenia: April 7
Mothers’ Day is celebrated all over the world as a mark of respect to all the mothers, recognizing their efforts and significance to each and every family. But the dates of this holiday are different in many countries. The Armenians commemorate Mothers’ Day every 7th of April. This is also a Beauty Day dedicated to all women in the country.
In Armenia, after the collapse of the Soviet Union celebrations of International Women's Day were abandoned. Instead, April 7 was introduced as state holiday of ‘Beauty and Motherhood’. The new holiday immediately became popular among Armenians, as it commemorates one of the main holidays of the Armenian Church, the Annunciation. However, people still kept celebrating Women's Day on March 8 as well. Public discussion held on the topic of two ‘Women’s Days’ in Armenia resulted in the recognition of the so called ‘Women’s Month’ which is the period between March 8 and April 7. The difference of these two holidays is that March 8 is celebrated as all women day and April 7 is mother’s day.
